Top 5 Interesting Facts About Eyeglasses

What funky facts are there out in the world about eyeglasses and vision? I scoured the internet to see what I could find. After a good week of researching, I came up with the five best interesting facts about eyes, glasses, and the like!

No 5: While the origin of eyeglasses is relatively unknown and widely debated, reading glasses first appeared on the scene in Italy around 1260 C.E. They were initially designed to help the elderly in their quest for reading. The reading glasses were insanely popular very quickly but there was one drawback - arms had not been invented for the prescriptio eyeglasses and the frames kept slipping down the nose! The Spanish tried to remedy this by tying ribbons to the frames and then wrapping them around their ears but the local folks were not so keen on that idea. No 4: The human eyeball weighs approximately one ounce. Imagine all the work your eyes do: reading, discovering, watching TV, refracting light, being pretty...etc. They do all this work within one ounce. Amazing! The human body truly astounds us! No 3: Wear a gold earring or eyeglasses? Personally, I would choose eyeglasses but sailors once believed that wearing a gold earring would help to improve their eyesight. We here at GlassesUSA are a little unsure of how a cold earring could possibly improve your eyesight or what the correlation between the gold earring and the eyes are the sailors must have had a reason! No 2: Sunglasses came on the scene in 1929 when a young innovator, Sam Foster, convinced the Woolworth's store on the Atlantic City Boardwalk to sell his new brand of sunglasses - FosterGrant. They became an instant sensation in the 1930's when worn by the era's most popular movie stars! The American culture has Sam Foster to thank for making something like eye protection from UVA and UVB rays look so cool and hip!
It's hard to pick one last fact that could possibly be more interesting than wearing a gold earring to help your eyesight but here goes... No 1: Thomas Jefferson had more eyeglasses than I do. During his presidency, Jefferson ordered eyeglasses from Philadelphia optician, John McAllister. This grew into a two year union where Jefferson would instruct McAllister to fashion glasses for him for any occasion. The process would take about two weeks tomanufacture each frame. On occasion, McAllister would send President Jefferson a pair of frames that Jefferson was not too pleased about. The result would be a written letter and a diagram of exactly what kind of eyeglass frame the president would like - hand drawn by Thomas Jefferson himself.

Now, go. Go and use this information at any trivia night you may come across.(source:http://www.articlesbase.com/vision-articles/top-5-interesting-facts-about-eyeglasses-746052.html)

Buying Cheap Prescription Glasses

Today, spectacles have become much more than just as vision correction tool. It has become a fashion accessory that adds to your style quotient. However, buying high quality spectacles on the high street has definitely become a costly affair. Even the simplest pair of spectacles starts from about £80.

The reason? Well, it is because these costs do not just include the price of the spectacles alone. They also include the huge overheads, store rent and large mark-ups. All these factors lead to a tremendous increase in theprices of glasses.

Going for the Cheaper Option
One of the best ways to save money on eyewear is buying glasses online. There are several online stores that sell spectacles at almost half the high street prices thereby benefiting the consumer greatly. From conventional fully rimmed, semi rimless and rimless prescription glasses or trendy and offbeat designer glasses and sun glasses, these stores have it all. These stores also offer different lens types like bifocal and varifocal lenses.

The reason? Well, it is because these costs do not just include the price of the spectacles alone. They also include the huge overheads, store rent and large mark-ups. All these factors lead to a tremendous increase in theprices of glasses.

Be it reading glasses or distance spectacles, visitors just need to select the frame, enter the prescription and place an order. In these simple steps, the spectacles would be delivered right at the door step.

Another frequently asked question about buying spectacles online is about the quality. Making a purchase online in no way compromises on the quality or looks of the spectacles. In fact you can get the best of the brands and spectacles on the various online spectacles stores.

Buying prescription glasses online becomes a cheaper option mainly because of the significantly lower overheads. Buyers no longer need to pay for the store rentals or sales staff.

Top Tips for Buying Eyeglasses

Purchasing eyeglasses is nerve wracking! Everyone has questions that run through their head when buying eyeglasses, like "are these frames too big for my face?" and "plastic eyeglasses or metal?" Ladies seem to have it a bit easier because they have a wider selection of sizes, shapes, colors, styles, and patterns. The larger selection may seem easier but in fact, it makes things a little more complicated. In the past, men had two different types of "fashion" eyeglass styles: metal and thick plastic. Talk about bland! We are not in high school and your parents don't help you buy your eyeglasses. Eyeglasses should help enhance your look not make you look more harsh.

So, how can you break from the mold and choose prescription glasses that make you look like a chic individual with style and class? It's easy. Stick to this guide and you'll pick the best eyeglasses for you!

Grab your friend for help...
Your friends are generally pretty open and honest with you when you buy clothing so they can be just as helpful when you are looking to buyeyeglasses so make your best friend sit with you while you look at eyeglass frames. Really, make them sit with you through the whole process! You want their honest opinion and they will openly and honestly tell you if you look like a nerd or if the eyeglasses are fashionable on you- even when looking at them online.

Stay in line with your normal style
Everyone gets the urge to try something new and what that's great, try choosing new colors - like choosing black over silver or gunmetal over gold. However, do not deviate from your own style when it comes to eyeglasses. If you normally wear simple, silver metal frames - do not step too far away from this and go for big, bold plastic frames. This will make you a VERY unhappy person not to mention an aggravated customer. If you still want a different look, shop online and save yourself some money while you are at it.

Stick with your fashion taste
Do you prefer the casual jeans and a t-shirt as opposed to wearing business wear all day? Aim for dual-toned plastic frames, or even black frames with thinner plastic to spice it up a bit as opposed to keeping things very simple. If you prefer the posh styles - try the more simplistic frames like silver or gold metal frames that will not overpower your look.

Take your time
Never feel rushed to make a decision when it comes to buying eyeglasses. It seems like a simple idea but regardless of price, eyeglasses are a huge investment. If you do not have that "I must have them" feeling - don't buy them! However, much like buying a great pair of jeans - you'll know instantly if you love them. If you love 'em, buy 'em!

Shopping for eyeglasses should not be a mission! They should be an asset to your wardrobe and a positive aspect to your appearance. Eyeglasses are the "hot" accessory!
